What Is GEO? How Your Business Can Appear in ChatGPT and Google AI Search

What is GEO and how is it different from SEO? A plain guide to getting your business recommended in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

Your customers no longer search only on Google. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity questions like "Can you recommend a reliable accounting software company in Istanbul?" or "Is there an agency that builds dealer portals?" And for many searches, Google now shows an AI-generated summary at the very top of the results.

Is your business mentioned in those answers? If not, the customer may have made a decision before ever reaching your website. That's exactly what GEO is about.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization, also called AI search visibility. Its goal is to make sure your business appears, with accurate information, in answers from systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews.

In classic SEO, the goal is to rank high in search results. In GEO, the goal is to be cited as a source inside the answer an AI builds, or to be named among the businesses it recommends.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO is built on top of SEO. Many AI assistants rely on search engine indexes to find up-to-date information, and Google's AI Overviews draw on pages Google has already indexed. A site that's invisible or technically broken on Google will struggle to appear in AI answers too.

In short, there's no GEO without a solid SEO foundation, but SEO alone may no longer be enough.

Where do AI assistants get their answers?

Broadly, from two sources:

  • Training data: the large archive of text the model read in the past. This knowledge is frozen at a certain date and isn't current.
  • Live web search: when a question needs current information, the assistant searches the web, reads the pages it finds and builds its answer from them.

The real opportunity for your business is in the second part. If an assistant can find your site, read it and trust its content, your chances of being included go up.

How to prepare your site for AI search

Write clear, question-focused content

AI systems favor text that answers a question directly and is clearly structured. On your service pages, explain what you do, who you serve and how you work in plain language. Answer the questions your customers actually ask in an FAQ section. Use less marketing speak and more concrete information.

Use structured data

Structured data (schema) labels the information on your page in a language machines understand: business name, address, phone, services, FAQs and more. These labels help Google and other systems interpret your site correctly.

Keep your business information consistent everywhere

Your name, address, phone number and description should be the same on your website, Google Business Profile, social media accounts and business directories. Inconsistent information makes it harder for AI to trust you.

Get mentioned on other sites

When an AI recommends a business, it doesn't only look at that business's own website. Customer reviews, industry sites, news articles, directories and forums all matter. What others say about you builds more trust than what you say about yourself.

Don't block AI crawlers

Some sites unknowingly block AI crawlers through their robots.txt file or security settings. Check whether crawlers from companies like OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity can access your site. Which ones you allow or block is your decision; what matters is making it consciously.

Keep your site fast and readable

Some crawlers can't fully read sites whose content only appears after JavaScript runs in the browser. Having important content directly in the page source is safer for both Google and AI systems.

A note on llms.txt

llms.txt is a proposed file format for giving AI systems a summary of your site. There's no harm in adding one and it's easy to set up, but it isn't yet an established standard used by all major AI companies. Don't expect miracles from it alone; the fundamentals above matter far more.

How do you measure results?

GEO is harder to measure than classic SEO, but there are ways to track it:

  1. Regularly ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask; note whether you're mentioned and whether the information is accurate.
  2. Track visits from sources like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in Google Analytics.
  3. Monitor your impressions in Google Search Console; appearances in Google's AI features are reflected in this data too.
  4. Ask new customers how they heard about you. When you start hearing "ChatGPT recommended you," you're on the right track.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO only for large companies?

No. It's actually a big opportunity for local and niche businesses. When an AI wants to recommend a specialist in a certain city or field, a small company that offers clear, reliable information on that topic can stand out.

How long until results show?

Like SEO, it takes time. After content and technical changes, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months for your site to be indexed and for AI systems to start using the information.

What if an AI gives wrong information about my business?

First, try to find the source of the error; it's often an old directory listing, an outdated profile or a vague statement on your own site. State the correct information clearly on your website and update your listings on other platforms.

Do I need to rebuild my current site?

Usually not. Making content more question-focused, adding structured data and fixing technical access settings is typically a good enough start.

Conclusion

Search habits are changing, but the core rule stays the same: businesses that offer clear, accurate and trustworthy information get found. GEO means presenting that information in a way AI can read, understand and cite.
